Have you done everything possible to ensure that your tree grows healthy?  Does it seem like something should be done, but you’re unsure what it is? Taking care of trees and plants can be tricky and, in some cases, dangerous, so it takes a lot of skill and practice. This is why it is crucial to use professional tree care services in all aspects of tree management. But who should you go to for help? In this article, you’ll learn how arborists can greatly help you provide the best care for your plants.

What is an Arborist?

An arborist is someone who specializes in the maintenance and care of plants. Though most arborists are referred to as tree service technicians, their knowledge spans many aspects of arboriculture. They specialize in the care and cultivation of trees, shrubs, and other woody plants. They also investigate the growth, reaction to pruning, decay process, diseases, and various aspects of tree surgery.

Arborists use a variety of techniques to care for trees. One example is tree pruning, in which they must remove or reduce certain body parts of a tree. Another option is tree removal, which is advised when a tree becomes threatening or dangerous. Arborists are well-versed in fertilization and spraying techniques to ensure the health of your plants and trees. This job may appear simple at first glance, but it involves a lot of intricacies that require specialized training.

Certification Matters

Anyone can say they are arborists, but always look for someone who is certified. To become a Certified Arborist, you must first obtain credentials from the ISA (International Society of Arboriculture). The International Society of Arboriculture is the organization tasked with providing education for future arborists and assessing the knowledge and skill level of those seeking certification as arborists.

The ISA will evaluate the applicant’s ability based on 10 areas of knowledge: soil management, identification and selection, installation and establishment, safe work practices, tree biology, pruning, diagnosis and treatment, urban forestry, tree protection, and tree risk management.

The certificate is only valid for three years. Recertifying requires either retaking the certification exam or accumulating at least 30 continuing education units over the three–year certification period. The units are related to the ten knowledge domains listed earlier.  The certificate’s validity period is limited because ISA values continuous education and growth, which aligns perfectly with the values we uphold here at Green Tech Tree.

Why Hire a Certified Arborist?

We usually call an arborist when we notice a dying tree or have an emergency tree need. Remember that arborists can help even when it’s not crunch time. A certified arborist is well-versed in preventative maintenance, which involves insect and disease control, as well as timely pruning and trimming.

If you still want to plant trees in your yard, an arborist can show you how to do it correctly by assessing the location. There are also specific tree species that should be planted in a particular area or region. You’d think that hiring a certified arborist would be more expensive, but it actually saves you money. With proper pre-planting consultation and maintenance, you can avoid costly emergency tree care.
